Holiday Hosting Cleaning Checklist: Before, During and After

A holiday hosting cleaning checklist for before guests arrive, the day of the party and after they leave, with the supplies to stock up on.

Short answerSplit the work into three passes: clean the rooms guests will use two days ahead, do a last-hour reset on the day, and handle stains, dishes and floors the morning after. Stock a small spill kit so a spill during the party takes a minute, not an evening.

Before guests arrive (the two days ahead)

  • Decide which rooms guests will use: the entry, the dining or living area, the kitchen and one bathroom. Clean those first and close the doors to the rest.
  • Clear counters, the coffee table and the guest bathroom counter. Put loose items in a basket or a closet.
  • Dust surfaces from high to low, then vacuum or sweep so the dust you disturb lands on floors you clean last.
  • Wipe the kitchen counters, the stovetop and the sink with an all-purpose cleaner.
  • Clean the guest bathroom: toilet, sink, mirror and floor. Set out a fresh hand towel, hand soap and a spare roll of toilet paper.
  • Clean glass tables, mirrors and the glass on the entry door with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
  • Run the dishwasher so it is empty before the party, and clear fridge space for dishes and leftovers.
  • Check tablecloths, napkins and throws for old stains. Pretreat and wash them now, and keep stained items out of the dryer until the stain is gone.

Read each cleaner's label and never mix cleaners, especially bleach products with ammonia or acid cleaners.

The day of the party (the last hour)

  • Empty every trash can and put in fresh bags.
  • Wipe the kitchen counters and the guest bathroom sink one more time.
  • Do a quick floor pass in the entry and the kitchen.
  • Set out a spill kit: white cloths, paper towels, a laundry stain remover and a carpet spot remover. Know where it is before you need it.
  • Put out coasters and extra napkins where drinks will be set down.
  • Open a window for a few minutes or run the exhaust fan so the house smells fresh without heavy sprays.

During the party (quick resets)

  • Blot spills right away with a white cloth, working from the outside in. Do not rub.
  • For red wine, cranberry sauce, gravy and candle wax, follow the stain guides linked at the end of this page.
  • Keep a trash bag by the kitchen door for plates and wrapping paper, and swap it when it is two-thirds full.
  • Take five minutes between courses to clear plates and wipe the table.

After guests leave (the next morning)

  • Put leftovers away first, then clear the table and counters.
  • Run the dishwasher and wash pots and roasting pans with dish soap.
  • Check tablecloths, napkins, rugs and upholstery for stains. Treat them before washing, and keep them out of the dryer until the stain is gone.
  • Wipe tables, counters, door handles and light switches.
  • Clean the guest bathroom and swap in fresh towels.
  • Vacuum or sweep every room guests used, and look for glitter, tree needles and crumbs along the edges.
  • Take out the trash and recycling, including boxes and wrapping paper.

How we chose

This guide is desk research. The steps follow general housekeeping practice and the care guidance in our stain guides, and the supplies are the products those steps name. We did not test any of these products or methods; the notes come from brand pages, retailer listings and published care guidance, and they describe what the listing says rather than how a product performs. Always follow the care label on the item and test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Listings, sellers and sizes change quickly. At time of writing (October 19, 2026), every "Check price on Amazon" button below went to an exact Amazon listing that was new and in stock. Confirm the size and seller on the listing before you buy.
