HomeWiseReview guides are desk research. We read what brands, retailers and other reviewers publish about a product, compare it, and write up what we find. We do not claim to have tested the products ourselves, and a guide says so where it matters.
The short version
- Picks are based on brand and manufacturer pages, ingredient lists and specifications, retailer listings and published reviews.
- Unless a page says it draws on personal experience, nothing on it should be read as a hands-on test. As our About page puts it, when we have personal experience with a product, we say so.
- AI tools and automated systems help with research, drafting and checks. People set the topics, the rules and the approvals.
- Some links are affiliate links. We do not recommend products just because they pay higher commissions.
What we look at
- Brand and manufacturer pages: the size, formula, contents, claims and care instructions the maker states. We treat claims as claims, so a guide says “the brand says” or “the listing says” rather than presenting them as proven.
- Ingredient lists and specifications, as published.
- Retailer listings: the product title, what is in the box, the size or variant, who sells it and whether it is new and in stock.
- Published reviews and owner feedback, to spot common complaints such as a formula that clumps or a tool that feels heavy.
- Care guidance from the manufacturer and published cleaning advice, for the cleaning how-tos.
How we choose picks
Guides group picks by who they suit: a hair type, a skin concern, a routine or a budget. We favor products with clear listings and consistent reviews, name the trade-offs we found in the sources, and say who should skip a pick. Our guides are informational and are not medical advice. Skin, scalp and eye conditions need a clinician, not a buying guide.
How we check Amazon links
A product link goes to an exact Amazon listing only when the listing is new, in stock and the same product, size or variant the guide describes. When we cannot confirm that, the link is labeled “Search Amazon for” the product, so you land on a search instead of the wrong item. We check links against Amazon’s product data when we publish or update a guide, and the gift guides show the date of their last check.
Prices and stock change, so we avoid printing prices as facts. Where a guide shows a price band or an “under” label, it applies at time of writing.
AI tools and automation
HomeWiseReview uses AI tools and automated systems for research, drafting and checks. Contributor bylines do not imply personal product testing or human review of every automated update. Individual research guides describe their evidence and testing limits. People set the topics, rules and approvals, and automated checks cover things like link targets, listing availability and wording that implies personal testing.
Who is behind the guides
Each guide has a byline that links to a contributor page: Jess West (Lead Editor), Philip West, and two contributors who write under pen names for privacy, Aunty Esi and Grandma Lucy. A byline shows who edited or contributed. It does not mean that person tested the product.
How we make money
Some pages include affiliate links. If you buy through those links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Read the full affiliate disclosure.
Corrections and updates
Products change. Posts show a “Last updated” date, and we revise guides when products or listings change. If you find a mistake, or a link that no longer matches the product, tell us through the contact details on our About page and we will check it.
Common questions
Do you test the products you recommend?
Not as a rule. Our guides are desk research, and a guide says when it draws on personal experience. Where a guide has no such statement, read its picks as a summary of brand pages, listings and published reviews.
Are your guides written by AI?
AI tools and automated systems help with research, drafting and checks, as described above. Bylines do not mean the named person personally tested the product or reviewed every automated update.
Why do some links say “Search Amazon”?
Those picks did not have a new, in-stock listing that matched the product exactly when we checked. The search link takes you to Amazon’s results for that product so you can pick the right variant and seller yourself.
Do you earn money when I click a link?
We may earn a commission if you buy through an affiliate link. It costs you nothing extra, and it does not decide which products we list.
