Short answerBy the makers' own figures, the quietest air purifier here is the Coway Airmega Halo at 17.8 dB(A) on its lowest setting, followed by the Coway Airmega Mighty2 at 19 dB and the Mighty2 Mini at 19.2 dB. Every figure is the maker's lowest setting; the same purifiers reach about 44 to 61 dB on high, and a purifier filters less air on its quiet setting.

Almost every air purifier is sold as quiet, so this page ranks them by the number each maker actually publishes: the noise level on the lowest fan setting, usually sleep mode. The table also shows the loudest published setting and the maker's coverage figure, because a purifier that is quiet only because it is small will not keep up in a large room.

How this page works

Desk research only. We did not measure any of these purifiers. Each noise figure was read from the maker's own product page (the link in the Source column) on the date shown above, and the exact phrase it came from is stored with the data. Makers measure noise in their own labs and do not always say how, so treat a 1 or 2 dB difference as a tie. Levoit's Core 400S-P page gives 22 dB in its specification table but says as low as 24 dB elsewhere on the same page; the table uses the specification figure.

Only brands whose product pages publish a noise figure we could read are included: Coway, Levoit and Medify. Brands whose pages we could not read, or that publish no decibel figure, are left out rather than estimated. Coverage figures use different bases (one air change an hour, 4.8 air changes an hour, or 30 minutes for Medify), so compare clean air delivery rate (CADR) where you can.

EPA says an air cleaner filters less air at a lower speed and that more air passes through the filter at higher fan speeds, so choose a purifier with enough capacity for the room that it can run on a quiet setting. EPA also says to avoid air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone.
