30 current setting-spray ingredient lists checked

Research completed and last verified 22 August 2026. Primary sources: 29. Additional sources: 1. Research type: Product ingredient-list and claim audit. Hands-on testing performed by HomeWise: No.

Ingredient-list classification across 30 current setting sprays.

Setting-spray shopping pages often reduce ingredient lists to “with alcohol” or “alcohol-free.” That misses fragrance. We checked 30 current product ingredient lists and classified ethanol-type alcohol, Parfum/Fragrance wording and named fragrant botanical oils separately, retaining the exact source and any explicit free-from claim.

The strictest result: only nine of 30 products contained neither an ethanol-type alcohol nor a Parfum/Fragrance string in the published list. Ten contained ethanol-type alcohol. Eighteen contained Parfum or Fragrance. Two additional products had no Parfum string but did list named fragrant oils or fragrance allergens.

Five ingredient-list classes

Classification Products Share
Both ethanol-type alcohol and parfum/fragrance 9 30%
Ethanol-type alcohol without parfum/fragrance 1 3.3%
Parfum/fragrance without ethanol-type alcohol 9 30%
Named fragrant oils without either string 2 6.7%
Neither ethanol-type alcohol nor parfum/fragrance 9 30%

These are text-based ingredient classes, not irritation scores. Fatty alcohols such as cetyl or cetearyl alcohol were not counted as ethanol-type alcohol. A product in the strict “neither” class can still contain other ingredients an individual dislikes or reacts to.

All 30 setting-spray ingredient lists

Product names link to the source checked on 22 August 2026. Twenty-nine are official brand pages. The e.l.f. row uses its current Ulta listing because a complete current list was not available on the brand page during collection. Brand wear and resistance statements remain manufacturer claims.

The findings that a two-column alcohol list misses

“No ethanol-type alcohol” was much broader than the strict neither group

Twenty products had no ethanol-type alcohol in the published list, but 11 of those still fell outside the strict neither class because they used Parfum/Fragrance or named fragrant oils. Readers avoiding both volatile alcohol and added fragrance need both fields, not a single alcohol-free filter.

No Parfum string did not always mean no fragrance-related ingredients

Rare Beauty Always an Optimist and Pixi Makeup Fixing Mist were separated into their own class because their lists contained named fragrant oils and/or fragrance allergens despite no Parfum/Fragrance string. This is a transparent ingredient-list flag, not a claim about concentration or reaction risk.

Explicit brand claims and our ingredient taxonomy are different evidence

Some brands explicitly call a product alcohol-free or fragrance-free; others simply publish a list that lacks the strings we classified. We retained claims separately and did not promote an inferred absence into a manufacturer promise. Formulas can also change, so the package list should be checked again before purchase.

How to use the audit

  1. If avoiding volatile ethanol matters, filter the ethanol-type column first.
  2. If avoiding Parfum/Fragrance matters, check that column separately.
  3. If botanical scent components matter, read the named-oils field and full source list.
  4. Use the finish and wear claims only to narrow candidates; they are not HomeWise test results.
  5. Patch-test a new cosmetic if you have a reaction history and stop use if irritation occurs.

HomeWise Research methodology

  • Research completed: 22 August 2026
  • Products/data points checked: 30 current setting sprays
  • Primary sources consulted: 29 official brand pages
  • Additional sources: 1 current major-retailer ingredient list
  • Research type: Product ingredient-list and claim audit
  • Hands-on testing performed by HomeWise: No
  • Last verified: 22 August 2026

Selection: We selected 30 widely available setting, fixing and priming sprays across prestige, mass and professional brands. Each required a current ingredient list from the brand, except e.l.f., for which the complete current Ulta list was retained as the additional source.

Classification: Ethanol-type includes Alcohol Denat., ethanol/ethyl alcohol or SD alcohol; it excludes fatty alcohols. Parfum/fragrance requires that explicit term in the list. Named fragrant oils is a separate class for lists without either target string that still name aromatic essential oils or fragrance allergens. The five classes are mutually exclusive and sum to 30.

Limitations: Ingredient lists can change by country or reformulation. Text presence does not disclose concentration, exposure or individual tolerability. Botanical ingredients are not automatically irritating, and absence of our target terms does not mean allergen-free. We did not spray, smell, wear, measure hold, test transfer or assess skin reactions. Wear, waterproof and finish language remains attributed to the manufacturer.
