A refillable lipstick can be cheaper the second time, but only if the replacement bullet still exists, fits the case you own and can actually be bought. We checked 20 current systems across 18 brands on their official U.S. sites, recording starter price, refill price, compatibility and the live purchase route.

Only 11 of the 20 had a clearly buyable U.S. refill route when checked. Five more still had an official listing but the refill, or a required reusable case, was on a waitlist or out of stock. Fenty’s case page pointed to a broken refill URL, while current U.S. lipstick-refill listings were not retained for Lancôme or Givenchy. Louis Vuitton published an exact $69 refill page, but its server-rendered page did not expose a checkout-state control, so we kept it separate rather than guessing.

Main finding: 16 systems exposed a complete starter/refill price pair. The median nominal saving was 37.6% on the next bullet, but only 11 of 20 systems passed the more useful test: a clearly buyable U.S. refill route. Among those 11, the median nominal saving was 38.5%.

What the 20-system check found

  • 11 systems had a clearly buyable route. We observed a usable current U.S. purchase path for both the starter or retained case and at least one compatible refill.
  • Five were listed but blocked. Rouge Dior, Prada, Valentino and YSL had a refill listing that showed waitlist, out-of-stock or notify status in the retained exact page or variant. MOB still listed the $24 lipstick refill, but the required $5 Lip Capsule showed “Notify Me When Available.”
  • Three had a broken or missing U.S. route. Fenty’s current case page linked to a 404 “The Fill” URL. Lancôme’s current U.S. full page called L’Absolu Rouge refillable, and Givenchy sells refills in other regions, but neither yielded a current U.S. lipstick-refill listing we could retain.
  • One remained deliberately unresolved. Louis Vuitton’s exact refill page published a price and compatibility rule, but its retained server render exposed neither an add control nor a notify control.

The refillable lipstick price and availability table

“Nominal saving” is the difference between the current complete starter price and the replacement-bullet price. It is not a promise that the refill is in stock. Where a brand sells case and color separately, we added the lowest observed compatible case to one refill to construct the new-customer starter price.

A cheaper refill is not the same as a functioning system

The 16 complete price pairs look persuasive in isolation. Six promised at least 40% off the cost of buying the starter again, and the largest nominal gap was Louis Vuitton’s $91, or 56.9%. Five pairs saved less than 25%, with MOB lowest at 17.2% and Dior Addict at 20.8%.

But the route check changes the interpretation. MOB’s $5 reusable capsule was unavailable, so a new buyer could not assemble the nominal $29 starter despite the $24 lipstick listing. Prada’s standard lipstick remained visible while the retained refill variants showed out-of-stock states. YSL’s $29 refill looked economical next to the $48 full lipstick, but both refill colors on the current U.S. selector were out of stock.

That is why we did not rank systems by discount alone. A 50% theoretical saving behind a blocked checkout path is less useful than a 23% saving with a live compatible refill.

Compatibility can make an old case useless

Most systems are product-family specific. Chanel says its Rouge Allure L’Extrait refill fits only that case, while 31 Le Rouge refills are exclusive to 31 Le Rouge and cannot be used alone. Dior Addict and Rouge Dior are separate refill families. Guerlain adds a generation boundary: its new Rouge G cases and refills fit each other, not the prior generation.

Two brands documented broader current-family flexibility. Dries Van Noten says its current lipstick and lip-balm refills can move between its current cases. Hermès says the retained Rouge Hermès tube accepts its matte, satin, balm and shine refills. Even there, “universal” means within the named brand family, not across brands.

If you are comparing premium formulas, our high-end lipstick guide covers finish and wear choices that this economics study does not rank. Readers balancing comfort against repeat-purchase cost can pair this table with our lipsticks for dry lips guide.

How to check a refill system before buying

  1. Price the whole first purchase. Add the case and color when a brand sells them separately. A refill price alone is not a starter price.
  2. Open the exact refill page. A collection tile or “refillable” badge does not prove the current replacement bullet has an active purchase path.
  3. Read the fit sentence. Match both the product family and, for Guerlain, the product generation.
  4. Check at least one shade you would use. Stock can vary by color. Our class says what the retained route showed at one research moment, not that every shade was available.
  5. Keep the case and any refill cap. Several bullets cannot be used independently; some brands recommend retaining the small protective cap when switching shades.

For shade selection after the system check, see our nude lipsticks by undertone, vegan lipstick guide and drugstore lipstick guide. Those pages answer formula and shade questions; they do not establish current refill economics.

Convenience searches for five named systems

These marketplace searches are for locating the exact named products. They did not supply any price, fit or availability classification in the study. Verify the product family and generation against the official source before ordering.

Where this study fits in HomeWise

Our earlier clean-versus-conventional makeup pricing study looks at broader category pricing and performance signals. This page isolates one narrower mechanism: the amount retained in a lipstick case, the price of the next bullet and whether the replacement route is live.

The beauty and home swaps savings guide deals with annual habit changes; it should not be used to infer that every reusable package saves money. Browse the HomeWise makeup hub for the surrounding product, technique and claim-audit coverage.

HomeWise Research methodology

  • Research date: 1 September 2026.
  • Hands-on testing performed by HomeWise: No.
  • Sample: 20 current systems across 18 brands. Inclusion required a current official U.S. full-product or case page that marketed a refill mechanism, plus a current official refill route to test or a documented missing/broken U.S. route worth recording. Search results and refillable-lipstick roundups supplied discovery leads only.
  • Market boundary: United States. Foreign refill pages were used only to explain a regional mismatch and never to import price or buyability into a U.S. row.
  • Starter-price rule: where the case and color were separate, the lowest current compatible case plus one refill formed the starter. Optional engraving, charms, subscriptions, shipping and tax were excluded.
  • Price-pair rule: nominal saving equals starter price minus refill price; percentage equals that difference divided by starter price. No saving was calculated when either side lacked a stable current U.S. price.
  • Availability rule: “buyable route observed” required a current usable purchase control for the necessary case/starter and at least one compatible refill. Waitlist, notify, out-of-stock, 404 and missing-catalog states were kept separate. Louis Vuitton was not promoted to buyable when its retained render exposed no checkout-state control.
  • Compatibility rule: only explicit first-party fit wording was retained. Similar shapes, shared parent companies and foreign-market compatibility were not assumed.
  • Arithmetic: 16 complete pairs produced a 37.6% median and 36.5% unweighted mean nominal saving; the range was 17.2% to 56.9%. The 11 buyable-route systems had a 38.5% median nominal saving.

Limitations

Commerce pages change by shade, market, promotion, cookie state and time. An out-of-stock result is a dated observation, not a discontinuation claim. A server-rendered page can also omit controls that appear after client-side scripts run; this is why Louis Vuitton remains unresolved rather than labeled unavailable.

Starter and refill prices do not measure product longevity, formula quality, grams used per application, packaging waste, recycling access or how often a buyer changes shades. The calculation also assumes the reusable case survives and is retained. This is a price, fit and route audit, not a wear test, sustainability lifecycle assessment or recommendation that one formula suits every lip.
