“Try before you buy” can mean four very different things in foundation shopping: a small paid sample, a sample whose charge depends on a later purchase, a full-size product authorized to your card, or a camera tool that never sends formula to your home.
We checked 30 official brand sites and normalized the clearest current route available to a U.S. online shopper. We recorded what arrives, whether shade choice is exact or grouped, the displayed upfront fee, later charges, credits and deadlines. We did not treat a virtual match as physical evidence or a pay-later full size as a free sample.
The main finding: 19 of 30 brands exposed some physical route, but only 15 offered a standalone physical sample or kit. Two tied physical samples to another condition, two used full-size pay-later trials, and 11 led shoppers only to a digital or advisor route on the checked page. Among the 11 standalone physical programs with a clear positive fee, the median was $5 before shipping; listed fees ranged from $1.70 to $25.

The classification is about the current official route, not brand quality. “Digital only” does not prove a store counter will never provide a sample, and “physical” does not guarantee that every shade is in stock or that shipping is free.

Fees below are the displayed sample, kit or immediate trial fee on the retained U.S. page. Tax, ordinary shipping and full-size prices are excluded unless the official terms made an immediate shipping charge central to the trial. “Not stated” means the checked page did not publish a field; we did not fill gaps from old promotions or retailer summaries.

A $0 headline does not always mean a free sample
The largest practical difference is not price; it is what the card transaction commits you to. Laura Geller says shoppers can choose up to four full-size items at $0 upfront, but it places a preauthorization and charges kept products after the 14-day period. IL Makiage likewise calls its offer full size, charges $5.90 U.S. shipping immediately and requires a timely return or exchange to avoid product charges.
Haus Labs sits between a normal sample purchase and a full-size trial. Five sample shades arrive, but the shopper pays shipping and faces a $12-plus-tax deferred charge unless a qualifying full-size foundation is bought with the same email within 21 days. That is materially different from NARS’s $5 card with a later $10 credit or MG Naturals’ $25 kit with a $25 later-purchase credit.
Estée Lauder uses another model: $15 buys two shopper-selected deluxe samples with free shipping, then a later full-size purchase receives 15% off. A percentage discount is not equivalent to a fixed-dollar credit, so it was not counted with NARS and MG Naturals.
Paid physical samples cluster near $5, but size and choice do not
Eleven standalone physical programs published a clear positive fee. Sorted from low to high, the fees were $1.70, $2, $4, $4, $5, $5, $8, $10, $15, $20 and $25. The median was $5. This is a program-fee comparison, not price per milliliter: several brands do not publish sample volume, and the products range from packettes and cards to jars and 14-piece kits.
The least expensive paid listing in this subset was Glo Skin Beauty’s $1.70 one-shade Pressed Base sample. The most expensive was MG Naturals’ $25 14-mini kit, whose official terms return the full kit price as a full-size credit for 45 days. Lucy Minerals’ $20 kit lets the shopper choose six foundation shades and formulas, while Root Pretty sells one exact mineral shade for $4. These offers answer different needs, so fee alone is not a sensible winner.
Exact shade choice and family sets solve different problems
An exact-selection route is useful when another foundation shade already gives you a reliable reference. Estée Lauder lets the shopper select two displayed shades; RCMA, Glo Skin Beauty, Omiana, Alima Pure and Root Pretty expose individual shade choices. Lucy Minerals goes further by letting the shopper choose six shades and formulas.
Grouped sets are more useful when the uncertainty is within a depth band. Haus Labs offers six five-shade families. DKM has four fixed four-shade groups. Toups supplies six shades in its Light and Medium sets and four in Deep. Lisa Eldridge lists ten cards with four neighboring shades each. MG Naturals groups 14 minis into Light, Medium or Deep and crosses four base formulas, trading exact control for breadth.
Silk Naturals is the outlier: its intro route is a self-mixing mineral kit with one ivory base and four tinted bases. That can explore ratios, but it is not equivalent to receiving a ready-made shade with a stable name.
Digital matching cannot answer the wear question
Eleven checked brands routed the online shopper to a quiz, camera tool, virtual try-on or advisor rather than a physical sample. Those tools can narrow a shade shortlist. They cannot show oxidation, texture, comfort, transfer, finish in changing light or how a formula behaves over several hours.
If a digital route is the only official option, use it as one input. Cross-reference a shade you already own, compare jaw and neck in daylight after purchase, and keep the return terms. We selected a mixed sample of prestige, mass-market and independent brands with current U.S. or U.S.-localized official foundation pages. For each brand, we retained the clearest official online route found for physical sampling, a pay-later trial or shade matching. We separated the price of a sample from shipping, tax, preauthorization, deferred charge and later-purchase incentive.
For the fee analysis, only standalone physical programs with a clear positive numeric U.S.-dollar fee were included. The median is the middle of 11 sorted fees. $0 listings, unstated prices, purchase-linked samples, deferred-charge sample sets and full-size trials were excluded from that calculation because they do not represent the same transaction.
Important limitations: availability, stock, fees and terms can change. We did not place orders, trigger authorizations, inspect every checkout state, measure sample volume where the brand omitted it, or assess shade-match accuracy. No physical offer found on a checked page is not proof that an in-store counter, a temporary promotion or another country lacks samples. Bottom line
Half of the 30 checked brands offered a standalone physical sample route, but the details matter more than the headline. A $5 card with a $10 credit, a $25 fully creditable kit, a $12 deferred sample charge and a $0-upfront full-size trial create very different obligations. Check what arrives, what your card is authorized for, when the clock starts and whether the offer lets you choose the shades you actually need.
