30 current DailyMed eczema-treatment labels checked

Research completed and last verified 22 August 2026. Primary sources: 30. Additional sources: 0. Research type: Drug Facts active-ingredient audit. Hands-on testing performed by HomeWise: No.

Chart showing 26 of 30 eczema Drug Facts labels with colloidal oatmeal and four with hydrocortisone or hydrocortisone acetate
Normalized active-ingredient classes across 30 current DailyMed eczema-treatment label records.

“Eczema cream” does not identify the Drug Facts active ingredient. We checked 30 current DailyMed records for creams, balms, lotions and gels marketed for eczema and normalized the active name and percentage from the label text or structured active field.

The main finding: 26 of 30 labels used colloidal oatmeal as the Drug Facts active; four used hydrocortisone or hydrocortisone acetate. Among the oatmeal labels, 1% was most common (13 records), followed by 2% (eight), 1.5% (three), 0.02% (one) and 5% (one). All four hydrocortisone records were 1%.

This is an ingredient-label audit, not medical advice and not evidence that one active or strength will work better for a particular person. Product names, inactive ingredients, ages, use limits and warnings still matter.

Colloidal oatmeal 5% 1
Hydrocortisone / acetate 1% 4

All 30 eczema Drug Facts records

Names link to the exact DailyMed source. We used the readable Drug Facts active-ingredient text first. Two records required the structured active field because the display section was missing or malformed. One oatmeal record expressed 1 g per 100 mL, which converts directly to 1% weight/volume; that conversion is disclosed in the retained dataset.

What the label patterns reveal

Most products in this sample were skin protectants, not steroid treatments

Colloidal oatmeal appeared in 86.7% of the checked records. Hydrocortisone appeared in 13.3%. A front-of-pack eczema phrase cannot tell readers which route they are looking at, so the Drug Facts active line is the fastest reliable discriminator.

Oatmeal percentage was not standardized at one level

Half the entire sample used 1% colloidal oatmeal, but 13 oatmeal records used another strength. The range from 0.02% to 5% is a label observation only. We did not assess why each manufacturer chose that strength or compare clinical effectiveness.

Similar names can hide different actives and instructions

Several records use generic “eczema relief” wording, and some private-label products resemble brand formulas. Always match the product, labeler, package size and active line. For hydrocortisone products especially, follow age limits, duration limits and warnings on the exact label and seek professional advice when symptoms are severe, infected, widespread or persistent.

How to read an eczema Drug Facts panel

  1. Active ingredient and purpose: identify colloidal oatmeal versus hydrocortisone before reading marketing copy.
  2. Strength: match the percentage on the exact package to the source record.
  3. Uses and warnings: check body-area, age and duration restrictions.
  4. Inactive ingredients: review personal allergens or known triggers separately; this audit does not classify all excipients.
  5. Escalation: do not use a label database as diagnosis or individualized treatment guidance.

For non-prescriptive routine context, see the HomeWise Aveeno Eczema Therapy review, body-lotion guide and barrier-repair guide. Those pages answer product-selection and routine questions; this audit verifies active labels.

HomeWise Research methodology

  • Research completed: 22 August 2026
  • Products/data points checked: 30 eczema-treatment Drug Facts records
  • Primary sources consulted: 30 exact DailyMed labels
  • Additional sources: 0
  • Research type: Drug Facts active-ingredient audit
  • Hands-on testing performed by HomeWise: No
  • Last verified: 22 August 2026

Selection: We searched current DailyMed eczema records and retained 30 creams, balms, gels or lotions with label dates from January through August 2026. We excluded soaps, body washes, shampoos, wipes, homeopathic products and records without colloidal oatmeal or hydrocortisone in the active fields.

Normalization: The Drug Facts active text controlled when it clearly supplied a name and percentage. The structured field was used for two records whose display active text was incomplete. We rejected implausible structured-unit calculations when the readable label text supplied a clear percentage. Classes and strengths were then counted without inferring equivalence between separate products.

Limitations: DailyMed is not a diagnosis, treatment recommendation or retail-stock service. Records can be revised, and similarly named products can differ. The purposive sample includes national brands, store labels and smaller labelers and is not a market-share estimate. We did not buy, apply, smell, patch-test or clinically assess any product, and we did not audit every inactive ingredient.
