Makeup Organizer Checklist: Measure, Match, Then Choose

Measure your space first

Do this before you open a shopping tab. The maker sizes below only help if you have your own numbers to compare them with.

1. Measure the width and depth of the counter, shelf or tray area you plan to use, and leave a gap at the sides so you can reach in.
2. Measure the height from the surface to whatever sits above it: a shelf, a mirror edge or a cabinet. Tall organizers need this number, for example Umbra lists its Pirouette at 13.64 inches high.
3. For a drawer, measure the inside length, width and depth with the drawer closed on its runners. Trays such as Vtopmart's are listed at 2 inches high.
4. Under a sink, measure the width and height of the opening and where the pipes run. Maker sizes are for the organizer's outside, so allow for the pipes.
5. Write the numbers down and compare them to the maker's outside dimensions. Some makers, such as Umbra, do not label which number is width, depth or height, so confirm on the listing's photos.
6. Check how much outer clearance a drawer needs to open fully, since pull-out units need room in front.

Match the organizer to what you own

• Count tall bottles (serums, perfume, foundation) and short items (lipsticks, compacts) separately. Tall bottles need a rotating tower or a stepped stand; short items suit drawers or trays.
• Palettes and compacts lie flat, so choose shallow drawers or a drawer with removable dividers. Umbra's Glam Large lists removable dividers for palettes and brushes.
• Brushes stand upright, so look for a cup or a tall compartment, not a flat tray.
• Anything with alcohol or acetone, such as perfume or nail polish remover: two Umbra pages warn that the plastic can react to alcohol and acetone and say to clean with water only. Read the care note of any plastic organizer before storing these.
• Travel items need a case that opens flat and hangs. BAGSMART lists its roll at 11 x 30 inches open.
• If you collect perfume, count the bottles and their width. A stepped stand shows more at once than a tray, while a rotating tray brings the back row forward.
