Short answerTop pick: the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV356E, a corded upright whose listing cites ASTM F1977 results for its HEPA filter and sealed system. If an outside certification matters most, the eufy E35 robot vacuum is the one pick that AAFA lists as Asthma & Allergy Friendly certified (AAFA lists no certified upright or canister vacuums in the U.S.), and the Miele Guard L1 Allergy is the bagged canister for hard floors and thin carpet. A HEPA vacuum may help keep allergens from returning to the air, but AAFA says vacuuming alone is not enough.

What HEPA and allergy-friendly mean on a vacuum

  • EPA's MERV page defines a HEPA filter as one with an average capture efficiency of at least 99.97 percent for 0.30 micron particles. A vacuum can use a HEPA filter and still let dust escape elsewhere in the machine.
  • AAFA's vacuum cleaner page says some vacuums release particles back into the air, so you want one with a system proven to trap them. Its certification standards include airborne allergens during vacuuming staying below set levels, the integrity of the whole air filtration system, and exposure while emptying the canister or changing the bag.
  • At time of writing, AAFA's certified lists show no upright vacuums and no canister vacuums certified in the U.S. Its cordless list names LG CordZero A9 Kompressor models, but Amazon's results for LG CordZero at time of writing showed a renewed A941KTMP, a different model, so LG is not among the picks. Its robot list names the eufy Omni E35.
  • Everything else on this page relies on the maker's or seller's HEPA claim. A listing that cites a test standard, such as ASTM F1977, tells you more than one that says only HEPA, and we point out which is which.

If allergy symptoms are severe or persistent, see a doctor. A vacuum is not a treatment, and this guide is shopping research rather than medical advice.

Which type of vacuum fits your home

  • Upright (Shark Navigator and Stratos, Bissell): a bagless dust cup is emptied by hand, and AAFA's standard counts exposure while emptying the canister, which is worth weighing. These suit carpet and mixed floors.
  • Bagged canister (Miele Guard L1 Allergy, Kenmore 600 Series): dust goes into a bag that you replace rather than a cup that you empty. The Miele listing describes it as suited to hard floors and thin-pile carpet, and the Kenmore listing describes carpet, hard floor and pet hair use.
  • Cordless stick (Shark PowerPro Plus): convenient for quick passes and stairs. The listing says its runtime of up to 50 minutes is measured at the handheld in standard mode.
  • Robot (eufy E35): cleans floors only, so mattresses and upholstery still need a handheld or upright, and it is the only pick with an AAFA certification.

Vacuuming habits for dust mite allergies

AAFA's dust mite page gives these steps:

  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter weekly to help keep mites and mite waste from getting back into the air. AAFA adds that vacuuming alone is not enough, because a large part of the dust mite population lives deep inside sofas, chairs, mattresses, pillows and carpeting.
  • Vacuum your mattress every 1 to 3 months, or more often if you do not have fully enclosed mattress allergen-barrier covers.
  • Have someone without a dust mite allergy clean your bedroom. If that is not possible, wear an N95 mask when dusting or vacuuming, and stay out of the room for at least 20 to 30 minutes afterward.
  • Keep the humidity in your home between 30 and 50 percent; a dehumidifier or air conditioner can help.

7 picks and who each one suits

  1. Shark Navigator Lift-Away Upright NV356E

Best for: A corded upright for carpet and hard floors, with a detachable pod for stairs and furniture.

The listing describes a HEPA filter with an Anti-Allergen Complete Seal that traps 99.9 percent of dust and allergens, citing ASTM F1977 results (0.3 microns and larger) from IBR Laboratories in 2024, and notes that "allergens" there means non-living matter. It has a 0.87 liter dust cup, a brushroll shutoff for hard floors and a washable HEPA filter that needs 24 hours to air dry after rinsing. AAFA's certified list does not name it.

  2. Shark Stratos Upright Vacuum AZ3002

Best for: Carpet, rugs and pet hair.

The listing describes an Anti-Allergen Complete Seal that works with a HEPA filter to trap 99.9 percent of dust and allergens inside the machine, based on ASTM F1977 for particles 0.3 microns or larger. It adds DuoClean PowerFins HairPro with a self-cleaning brushroll, a powered lift-away pod and Odor Neutralizer Technology. Our Shark Stratos review covers it in more detail.

  3. Shark PowerPro Plus Cordless Stick Vacuum IZ377H

Best for: A smaller home or a second vacuum for stairs, hard floors and quick passes.

The listing says HEPA filtration with an Anti-Allergen Complete Seal captures and traps over 99.97 percent of dust and allergens, based on ASTM F1977 for particles .3 microns and larger, and again defines allergens as non-living matter. It gives up to 50 minutes of runtime, measured at the handheld in standard mode, and describes FloorDetect brushroll adjustment and a self-cleaning brushroll.

  4. BISSELL MultiClean Allergen Lift-Off Pet Vacuum 2998

Best for: Pet owners who want a lift-off canister for stairs and upholstery.

The listing describes a HEPA sealed allergen system that traps 99.97 percent of dust and allergens, a detachable lift-off pod for stairs and upholstery, a tangle-free brush roll and swivel steering. It does not cite a test standard for the filtration figure, so treat 99.97 percent as the seller's claim.

  5. Miele Guard L1 Allergy Bagged Canister Vacuum

Best for: Hard floors and thin-pile carpet, with a sealed bag and a HEPA AirClean exhaust filter.

Miele's fact sheet for the Guard L1 Allergy (13115840) lists a HEPA AirClean exhaust filter, a bag change indicator, four selectable power modes and a 39 foot operating radius, and describes it as ideal for allergy sufferers because of that filter. The Amazon listing differs from the fact sheet on some specs, such as the floorhead and motor wattage, so confirm what ships before relying on a spec. The listing describes it as suited to hard floors and thin-pile carpet.

  6. Kenmore 600 Series 81615 Pet Friendly Bagged Canister Vacuum

Best for: A bagged canister for carpet, hard floors and pet hair, with a motorized pet tool.

The listing describes a triple HEPA filter system whose "enhanced HEPA filter traps 99.97% of dirt," two motors, a Pet PowerMate motorized tool and a retractable 28 foot cord, at 22.6 pounds. It does not name a test standard, and "enhanced HEPA" is the seller's wording, so compare it with the Shark listings that cite ASTM F1977.

  7. eufy E35 Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo

Best for: Anyone who wants a robot for daily floor upkeep and values an AAFA certification.

AAFA's robot vacuum list names the Robot Vacuum Omni E35 by eufy, and eufy's own page gives certificate AAFC: 2096/26/03/09/2155, issued August 5, 2026. eufy says the certification report shows removal of up to 95 percent of dust mite allergen and 98 percent of cat allergen from carpets and over 99.9 percent from hard floors, and that the certification does not relate to treating or managing asthma or allergies. The Amazon listing is titled eufy E35 and quotes 99 percent for hard floors.

Frequently asked questions

Is a HEPA vacuum enough to control dust mites?

No. AAFA's dust mite page says to vacuum weekly with a HEPA filter to help keep mites and mite waste from getting back into the air, but that vacuuming alone is not enough, since much of the dust mite population lives deep in sofas, mattresses, pillows and carpeting.

What does a sealed HEPA system mean on a vacuum?

Makers use terms like sealed system or Anti-Allergen Complete Seal for routing air through the HEPA filter instead of around it. AAFA's certification standard says the integrity of the whole air filtration system must be maintained, which is why a filter rating alone does not tell you how much dust escapes.

Should the person with the allergy do the vacuuming?

AAFA says to have someone without a dust mite allergy clean your bedroom. If that is not possible, wear an N95 mask when dusting or vacuuming, and stay out of the room for at least 20 to 30 minutes afterward, because cleaning stirs up dust.

Is a bagged or a bagless vacuum better for allergies?

AAFA does not rule either out. Its standard looks at dust released when the bag or canister is full and at exposure while changing the bag or cleaning the canister, so what matters is how cleanly a model handles emptying, whichever type you choose.

How we chose

This guide is desk research. We compared the Amazon listing for each vacuum with AAFA's vacuum cleaner page and certified product lists, EPA's MERV page, AAFA's dust mite page, eufy's certification page and Miele's fact sheet for the Guard L1 Allergy. We chose HEPA vacuums across four types, led by the one model AAFA lists, and left out models we could not confirm as current. Shark, Bissell and Kenmore details come from the Amazon listings, so they are written as what the listing says. We did not test any of these vacuums; filtration figures are the sellers' own unless AAFA is named.

Listings, sellers and models change quickly. At time of writing (October 29, 2026), every "Check price on Amazon" button on this page went to an exact Amazon listing for the product named, new and in stock. Prices are not shown because they change. Confirm the model number, accessories and seller on the listing before you buy.
