How to choose an eye cream after 50
- Match the texture to your lids. Dry, crepey skin usually likes a cream or balm such as Clinique All About Eyes Rich or StriVectin Contour Restore; a gel-cream such as StriVectin Hyaluronic Tripeptide is lighter if creams feel heavy or sit under concealer.
- Check fragrance first. The eye area is thin and reactive. CeraVe, Olay Smoothing Eyes 24, Clinique All About Eyes Rich and StriVectin Contour Restore are described by their makers as fragrance free, while Shiseido lists fragrance on its ingredient list.
- Pick one active at a time. Retinol (RoC, Olay) can make skin feel dry or sensitive, so follow the label, start every other night as RoC directs, and do not add a second strong active the same week. Peptide and hyaluronic acid formulas are usually the gentler start.
- Be realistic about claims. Eye creams moisturize and can soften the look of fine lines, dryness and puffiness. They do not lift skin or change bone structure, and results vary. Brand test figures come from the brands' own studies.
- Use common-sense safety. Keep every product out of the eyes as the label directs, patch-test on a small area first, and stop using a product if you get stinging, swelling or a rash. See a dermatologist for eyelid skin that is itchy, red or not improving, or for any change that worries you.
How to apply eye cream
- Start with clean, dry skin. Use a very small amount: CeraVe says to apply small dots around the eye area, and Shiseido suggests a rice grain-sized amount.
- Dot it along the orbital bone, the ridge under the eye and above the brow, rather than on the lash line. StriVectin says to distribute small dots under the eye area and around the orbital bone.
- Use your ring finger, the weakest finger, with a gentle patting or circular motion. Clinique says to apply with the ring finger using a gentle patting motion, and Shiseido says to move around the lid and brow bone.
- Follow the label for timing. CeraVe, Clinique and StriVectin say morning and evening; RoC says morning or night; Olay Smoothing Eyes 24 says nightly. Give any new cream several weeks before judging it.

Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado
Best for: Someone with dry lids who likes a rich, classic cream and wants a department-store brand.

Frequently asked questions
Do women over 50 really need a separate eye cream?
Not necessarily. A gentle face moisturizer can work if your eye skin tolerates it, but eye creams are made for thinner, drier skin and usually skip heavy fragrance, which is why many people over 50 choose one.
Is retinol safe to use around the eyes?
Only products made for the eye area should go there, and only as the label directs. RoC suggests starting every other night. Stop if your lids sting, swell or peel, and ask a dermatologist if irritation continues.
Which texture is best for crepey eyelids?
Dry, crepey lids usually prefer a cream or balm, such as Clinique All About Eyes Rich or StriVectin Contour Restore. Gel-creams suit people who find creams heavy, but the right choice depends on how dry your skin is.
Should I use eye cream in the morning, at night, or both?
Follow the label. CeraVe, Clinique and StriVectin say morning and evening, RoC says morning or night, and Olay Smoothing Eyes 24 says nightly. Retinol products are often kept for evenings.
How long before an eye cream shows results?
Brand studies run from days to several weeks, but those are the brands' own figures. Give a new cream at least four weeks of regular use, and expect softer-looking skin rather than dramatic change.
How we chose
This guide is desk research. We read the maker pages for CeraVe, Olay, RoC, Clinique, Shiseido and StriVectin and chose eight eye creams across drugstore, department-store and prestige brands, in cream, balm and gel-cream textures. We left out products with sun-protection wording on the product page, such as L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power, and any product whose maker page we could not read. We did not test any of these products; the notes describe what the brands say, attributed to them, not how a cream performs on your skin. The Kiehl's note comes from the retailer listing because the brand page blocked our fetch.
Listings, sellers and sizes change quickly. At time of writing (November 1, 2026), the "Check price on Amazon" buttons for six of these picks went to an exact Amazon listing for the product named, new and in stock; the RoC and StriVectin gel-cream picks open an Amazon search instead. The StriVectin site showed some items as sold out when we read it. Confirm the size, formula and seller before you buy.
