Best Detangling Brushes by Hair Type
Seven detangling brushes by hair type, from fine and fragile to coily, kids and wigs, with makers' wet and dry directions and the AAD's hair tips.
Short answerMatch the brush to the hair first. For fine or fragile hair, Tangle Teezer's softer Fine & Fragile version; for thick hair, Olivia Garden's iDetangle ID-TH; for 3C to 4C curls, Tangle Teezer's Naturally Curly; for tight coils, the Felicia Leatherwood Detangler. Then check wet or dry: the American Academy of Dermatology advises a wide-tooth comb on wet hair, while these makers sell brushes for it.

Wet hair or dry hair?
The makers and the American Academy of Dermatology (aad.org) do not fully agree, so here are both sides.
- What the makers say: Tangle Teezer designs its Ultimate Detangler for use on wet hair and in the shower, and its Naturally Curly version for use on wet hair. Tangle Teezer's Thick & Curly version is listed for wet or dry hair. Olivia Garden lists the iDetangle for wet and dry hair, and the Felicia Leatherwood Detangler is listed for wet and dry hair.
- What the AAD says: hair is delicate when wet, so use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush to detangle wet hair. Its habits page lists brushing wet hair as something that can damage hair.
- The AAD splits it by hair type. Thick, curly hair: comb in the shower before rinsing out conditioner. Straight hair: let it dry a bit before combing. Textured hair or tight curls: always comb while it is damp, with a wide-tooth comb.
- Where those meet: if you follow the AAD, use a brush like these on damp or dry hair, and keep a wide-tooth comb for soaking-wet hair. That is our reading of two sets of advice, not a test result.
- Technique, from the AAD: slowly comb the ends first, then work higher. Remove tangles gently, using a moisturizing conditioner if necessary, and avoid pulling and tugging.
- Heat: Tangle Teezer says its Detangling range should not be used with heat because the teeth can melt. The AAD says hair never needs 100 brush strokes a day and to brush and comb only to style.
- None of the makers here publishes breakage data we could check, so claims such as less breakage stay the maker's own.

-
Tangle Teezer Fine & Fragile Ultimate Detangler
Hair type: Fine, fragile, heat-damaged or color-treated hair.
Tangle Teezer says this version has soft-flex teeth a grade softer than its original Ultimate Detangler, made for fine, fragile, heat-damaged or color-treated hair, and that it is gentle on sensitive scalps in the shower. It has two tiers of teeth, long ones to detangle and short ones to smooth. The page warns to keep it away from heat, and the Amazon listing is sold in several colors.

Olivia Garden iDetangle Thick Hair ID-TH
Hair type: Thick or coarse hair, wet or dry.
Olivia Garden sells the iDetangle in fine, medium and thick versions and lists the thick ID-TH as a Memory-Flex tension bristle brush ideal for quickly detangling thick or coarse hair, with comfortable ball point tips. The head is flexible and vented, adjusts tension based on hair type and is listed for wet and dry hair. The Amazon listings do not make the version obvious, so this pick opens a labeled search.

Tangle Teezer Naturally Curly Ultimate Detangler
Hair type: Curly hair in the 3C to 4C range, detangled wet.
Tangle Teezer says the longer, firmer teeth are made for 3C to 4C hair and the shorter teeth help reduce frizz while keeping curls defined, and that it is designed for use on wet hair. The page quotes a claim that the teeth can cut detangling time in half, backed by a self-assessment of 102 women, which is the brand's survey and not a test we ran. Keep it away from heat, as the page says.

Felicia Leatherwood Detangler Brush
Hair type: Tight curls and coils, including taking down braids.
The maker describes widely spaced flexi-bristles, a wide handle with an opening for storage and a flexible three-side bonded head, and says it detangles wet and dry hair and helps when taking down braids. It also says the brush cuts detangling time in half, a claim we did not check. The page gives no bristle length or material, so wide spacing is the only fit detail.

-
Tangle Teezer Ultimate Detangler Mini
Hair type: Kids, small hands and travel bags, any hair type.
Tangle Teezer says the mini is perfect for travel, with a keyring hole on the handle, and that it confidently detangles any type of hair; the brand adds that it is not just for kids and is fine for adults. The page does not give measurements or an age range, and it carries the same keep-away-from-heat warning.

Wet Brush Original Detangler
Hair type: Anyone who wants a general-purpose brush for all hair textures.
Wet Brush's own page could not be read, so this comes from the Amazon listing title: ultra-soft IntelliFlex bristles said to detangle wet, dry and damaged hair with less breakage, for all hair textures. The exact claims, bristle material and size come from that title only. Our Wet Brush Original review goes through what else the brand says.

-
RED by Kiss Oval Wig Brush
Hair type: Wigs and hair extensions.
The maker says the stainless steel bristles glide through wigs and hair extensions, detangling without pulling or snagging, and that knot-free bristles minimize breakage. It also lists anti-static and anti-frizz finish and a user-friendly handle. The page does not say whether it suits wet hair or synthetic fiber specifically, so check the wig maker's care directions before brushing.

Frequently asked questions
Should you use a detangling brush on wet or dry hair?
Makers such as Tangle Teezer and Olivia Garden list their brushes for wet hair. The American Academy of Dermatology advises a wide-tooth comb for wet hair and says to comb textured or tightly curled hair while damp.
Is a detangling brush better than a wide-tooth comb?
None of the sources we read compares them head to head. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a wide-tooth comb for wet hair, and the brush makers describe their products as gentle on tangles.
Which detangling brush is best for curly hair?
Tangle Teezer says its Naturally Curly version is made for 3C to 4C hair and for wet use, and the Felicia Leatherwood Detangler is listed for tighter coils. Choose by curl pattern, then try a wide-tooth comb too.
How do you detangle hair without breakage?
The American Academy of Dermatology says to comb the ends first, then work upward, avoid tugging, and use a moisturizing conditioner if needed. Work in small sections and stop if a knot will not release.
How do you clean a detangling brush?
Tangle Teezer says to remove loose hair, then gently scrub between the teeth and the base with a clean toothbrush and soap in warm water, rinse, and let the brush dry naturally.
How we chose
This guide is desk research. We read each maker's product page, noted the hair type it names and its wet or dry directions, and checked the Amazon listings. We did not test any brush, so nothing here describes how a brush feels or how much breakage it prevents. Wet Brush's own page could not be read, so that pick uses the Amazon listing title only and says so.
At time of writing (November 8, 2026), six picks go to exact Amazon listings that were new and in stock, and the Olivia Garden iDetangle opens a labeled search because the listings do not say which version they sell. We chose picks to cover fine, thick, curly, coily, kids and wig hair.
