Best Bond Repair Treatments: 7 Picks by Step and Budget
Seven bond repair products for bleached, color-treated or heat-styled hair, from a drugstore pre-shampoo to salon-brand leave-ins, with each brand's directions.
Short answerPick the bond product that fits your wash day: a pre-shampoo treatment such as Olaplex N°.3PLUS or L'Oréal Paris EverPure Bond Repair+, a no-rinse leave-in such as K18 or Redken, or a weekly rinse-out mask. L'Oréal Paris is the drugstore pick; the rest are salon brands.

How to choose a bond repair treatment
- Know what the label claims. L'Oréal Paris explains that hair is mostly keratin, linked by hydrogen, ionic and disulfide bonds, and says bleaching can significantly damage the disulfide bonds, citing the International Journal of Cosmetic Science. Brands sell bond products to reinforce those links, but every repair claim on this page is the brand's own, not an independent test result.
- Choose the step first, then the brand. A pre-shampoo treatment goes on before you wash and rinses out, a leave-in stays in after washing, a shampoo and conditioner replace your daily pair, and an oil finishes the style.
- Expect different routines. K18 says to skip conditioner after its mask, while Olaplex says to follow N°.3PLUS with its shampoo and conditioner, so follow the brand's own order.
- Follow the frequency on the label. Olaplex says every 1-3 washes for N°.3PLUS, L'Oréal Paris says one to two times a week, amika says weekly, and K18 says four to six consecutive washes and then as needed.
- Match your hair type. Olaplex formulates N°.4 and N°.5 for medium to coarse textures and sells a separate N°.4FINE line for fine hair; K18 and L'Oréal Paris say their treatments suit all hair types.
- Protect the results. L'Oréal Paris suggests taking a break from bleach, dye, chemical treatments and hot tools, which it says can make existing damage worse, and getting a haircut every six to eight weeks.
- Know when to pick something else. Our hair mask guide separates bond repair from moisture masks, so read it if your hair feels dry rather than stretchy or weak.
A simple wash-day order
- If you use a pre-shampoo treatment, apply it to damp or wet hair first and leave it on for the time on the label (3 minutes for Olaplex N°.3PLUS, 5 to 10 minutes for L'Oréal Paris EverPure Bond Repair+), then rinse.
- Shampoo and condition with your usual pair or the matching bond shampoo and conditioner. Skip conditioner if you are using K18's leave-in mask, as K18 directs.
- Apply a leave-in such as K18 or Redken to clean, towel-dried hair, following the amount and wait time on its label.
- Finish with an oil if you use one, such as Olaplex N°.7, and use heat protection before hot tools.
7 picks and who each one suits
-
Olaplex N°.3PLUS Hair Repair Pre-Shampoo Treatment, 100 mL
Best for: Someone with damaged hair who wants a 3-minute step before shampoo.
Olaplex calls it a 3-minute pre-shampoo treatment for all hair types: apply it to wet hair from roots to ends, leave it on for 3 minutes, rinse, then shampoo and condition, every 1-3 washes. The brand says it is protein-free and uses its patented Bond Building Technology. At time of writing, Olaplex's old No.3 Hair Perfector page redirects to N°.3PLUS, so check the label if you own an older bottle.

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask, 1.7 fl oz
Best for: Someone who wants a no-rinse mask in place of conditioner.
K18's listing describes a leave-in peptide mask for damage from bleach, color, chemical services and heat. After shampooing you skip conditioner, work 1-3 pumps into clean, towel-dried hair, wait 4 minutes without rinsing and style, using it for 4-6 consecutive washes and then as needed. K18 says it works on all hair types and that most people see results after 2-3 uses, which are brand claims.

Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Conditioner
Best for: Someone who wants a salon-brand leave-in with 450°F heat protection.
The listing describes a leave-in treatment with citric acid and a bonding care complex that it says reinforces weakened bonds and reduces breakage, for all hair types including color-treated hair, with 450°F heat protection. Redken also sells matching Acidic Bonding Concentrate shampoo and conditioner, so this is the step to add if you do not already own a conditioning heat protectant.

amika The Kure Intense Strength Repair Mask, 250 mL
Best for: Someone who prefers a weekly rinse-out mask to a leave-in.
amika's product page says to massage it through wet hair after The Kure strength repair shampoo, let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse well and use it as a weekly treatment. amika describes an intensive mask meant to strengthen, reduce breakage and add moisture for dry, damaged hair, and it calls the product a strength repair mask rather than a bond builder. Older listings and our review's URL still say Bond Repair.

Frequently asked questions
Is Olaplex No. 3 still sold?
Olaplex's own site now lists N°.3PLUS Complete Repair Treatment, and at time of writing its old No.3 Hair Perfector page redirects to that product. Amazon searches for No.3 also return N°.3PLUS listings, so check the label on any older bottle before following older directions.
How often should I use a bond repair treatment?
It depends on the brand. Olaplex says every 1-3 washes for N°.3PLUS, L'Oréal Paris says one to two times a week for its pre-shampoo, amika says weekly for its mask, and K18 says four to six consecutive washes and then as needed. Follow the directions on your bottle.
Can I use bond repair products on fine hair?
Brands differ. Olaplex says N°.4 and N°.5 are formulated for medium to coarse textures and sells N°.4FINE and N°.5FINE for fine hair, while K18 and L'Oréal Paris say their treatments suit all hair types. Check the hair type on each label.
Is a bond repair treatment the same as a hair mask?
Not always. K18 sells a leave-in mask and Olaplex a pre-shampoo treatment, and amika sells its Kure as a strength repair mask rather than a bond builder. Our hair mask guide explains how to choose between bond repair and moisture masks.
How we chose
This guide is desk research. We read Olaplex's, amika's and L'Oréal Paris's own product pages and, for K18 and Redken, their Amazon listings (K18's product page text did not load for us and Redken's site did not open). We chose one product for each step of a wash day, across drugstore and salon brands. We did not test any of these products; every claim here is the brand's or a listing's, not a result we measured, and these are cosmetic hair-care products, not medical treatments. We left out the Olaplex No.8 mask because Olaplex's mask page does not list it at time of writing; its current masks are the Rich Hydration Mask and the Weightless Nourishing Mask.
Listings, sellers and sizes change quickly. At time of writing (October 29, 2026), every "Check price on Amazon" button on this page went to an exact Amazon listing for the product named, new and in stock. Confirm the size, version and seller on the listing before you buy.
