Best Boar Bristle Brushes and Mason Pearson Alternatives
Eight boar bristle brushes read from the makers' own pages: pure boar versus boar and nylon, and what Mason Pearson alternatives copy.
Short answerMason Pearson, Kent and Denman all pair nylon with natural bristle, while Mason Pearson's SB3 is pure boar and Kent's LC4 is pure natural bristle. Mason Pearson's Junior BN2 is the reference brush here, with a Dry Natural Rubber cushion; the makers of the alternatives do not publish matching cushion detail. This is desk research from maker pages, not a test.

Pure boar, boar and nylon, or nylon pins?
The makers disagree on little here. What follows is what their own pages say, not our ranking.
- Pure boar: Mason Pearson says pure boar suits fine to normal hair, with Sensitive versions for very fine or thinning hair. Spornette's cushion-brush page says cushion brushes with only boar hair are best suited to normal to fine hair types.
- Boar and nylon: Mason Pearson lists boar bristle and nylon for normal to thick hair, and describes the nylon tufts as the part that detangles. Kent says the nylon quills in its PF01 let the brush glide through knots without tugging and scratching while the bristle distributes natural oils.
- Nylon only: Mason Pearson lists nylon for thick, harder to manage hair, and Spornette says brushes with nylon bristles suit all hair types, textures and lengths. No nylon-only brush is a pick here because this page is about boar bristle.
- Boar bristles are a natural material. Mason Pearson's pages say they may vary between hairbrushes, and none of the makers publishes bristle length or stiffness in a unit you can compare, so soft versus firm stays the maker's word.
- Rings of tufts are the one countable figure: Mason Pearson lists seven rings on the BN2 and six on the SB3. Kent, Denman, Framar and Diane do not publish a count.
- The American Academy of Dermatology says hair never needs 100 brush strokes a day and that brushing is for styling. A brush is a cosmetic tool and does not treat hair loss; see a dermatologist for sudden or patchy shedding.
Mason Pearson's range, and what alternatives copy
Two features define the original: the bristle mix and the rubber cushion that the tufts sit in.
- The range: Mason Pearson's boar page lists pure boar brushes from the Large Extra B1, with eight rings of extra stiff tufts, down to the Pocket Sensitive SB4, with five rings of fine tufts. The boar and nylon range includes the Popular BN1, Junior BN2 and Pocket BN4.
- What the original is made of, per its specification list: a Dry Natural Rubber cushion, a cellulose acetate plastic handle and base, and boar bristle and nylon tufts. Each comes with a 12-month limited warranty that excludes normal wear and accidental damage.
- What alternatives copy: the bristle mix and the cushion idea. Kent's PF01 names a nylon and bristle mix in an air-cushioned head; Denman's D81M names a nylon and natural boar mix. Neither page names the cushion material, so the rubber part of the original is not confirmed for either.
- What the pages do not let us say: whether the bristles, the tuft setting or the build quality match. Only a side-by-side trial could answer that, and this page is desk research.
- If you want the original rather than a copy, our review of the Mason Pearson Popular and the straight-hair brush guide cover the larger sizes.
Boar bristle brush specs from the makers' pages
Makers describe these brushes in different ways, so the cells quote or closely paraphrase each page. Sizes are the maker's own units.
Specs read from each maker's own product page on November 8, 2026. "Not listed" means the source did not state it.

Eight boar bristle brushes, from Mason Pearson to budget
-
Mason Pearson Junior Bristle & Nylon BN2
Best for: Someone with mid-length to long hair who wants the brand's boar-and-nylon mix in its medium size.
Mason Pearson says the BN2 combines boar bristles, to distribute natural oils, with nylon tufts, to detangle, in seven rings of tufts. The specifications list a Dry Natural Rubber cushion, a cellulose acetate plastic handle and base, and a length of 8.87 inches. It is sold with a cleaning brush and a 12-month limited warranty. The maker's own store page says it delivers to UK destinations only, so US shoppers go through stockists.

Mason Pearson Handy Sensitive Hairbrush SB3
Best for: Someone with very fine hair who wants pure boar rather than a boar and nylon mix.
Mason Pearson lists the SB3 as boar bristle tufts only, six rings of fine bristles, on a Dry Natural Rubber cushion, 8.5 inches long. Its page names very fine or thinning hair and sensitive scalps as typical uses. A brush is a cosmetic tool, not a hair-loss treatment, so sudden or patchy shedding still belongs with a dermatologist. Boar bristles are natural and, in the maker's words, may vary between brushes.

Mason Pearson Pocket Bristle & Nylon BN4
Best for: Someone who wants the boar-and-nylon mix in a handbag size.
Mason Pearson lists the BN4 with boar bristle and nylon tufts on a Dry Natural Rubber cushion, 6.75 inches long and 2 inches wide. The maker recommends the range for medium textured hair and for fine hair with high density. The head is 3.5 inches, against 4.62 inches on the BN2, and the Amazon listings for the pocket models did not show a new, in-stock match, so this pick opens a labeled search.

Kent PF01 Large Cushion Bristle Nylon Mix Brush
Best for: Someone with medium to long hair who wants a cushion brush with a nylon and bristle mix.
Kent describes the PF01 as beechwood with an air-cushioned head and a rubber grip on the handle, filled with a mix of non-scratch nylon quills and bristle. It is 230mm long and 70mm wide. Kent's page says "bristle" and never says boar, although the Amazon title does, and it does not name the cushion material, so it matches the Mason Pearson layout only in outline.

Kent LC4 Cherrywood Pure White Bristle Oval Brush
Best for: Someone with medium to thick hair who wants a pure natural bristle brush without nylon.
Kent says the LC4 is made from cherrywood and filled with the finest pure white natural bristle, and lists it for medium to thick hair. The page gives an overall length of 225mm, a 95mm handle and a 55mm width. It does not describe a cushion, and its copy includes a hair-growth claim that we do not repeat. Kent allows a small tolerance on these sizes.

Denman D81M Boar and Nylon Bristle Brush
Best for: Someone who wants a smoothing brush for slick-back styles, wigs or extensions.
Denman describes the D81M as equipped with a mix of nylon and natural boar bristles, and lists it as ideal for slick-back looks, wigs and hair extensions, adding shine and detangling while smoothing. The page gives no length, cushion material or handle material, so those cells in the table say Not listed. The Amazon listing is sold in several colors; the link goes to the medium D81M.

-
Framar Mini Polish Brush
Best for: Someone who wants a purse-size boar and nylon brush for smoothing a ponytail or slick-back style.
Framar's product page names the mini brush as boar and nylon bristles for slick-back styles and describes it as a compact brush for on-the-go styling. It gives no dimensions, cushion or handle details. Framar's own name is Polish Brush while the Amazon titles call it a boar brush, so this pick opens a labeled search instead of one fixed listing.

Diane Smoothing Brush D9014
Best for: Someone who wants a curved boar bristle brush for edges, flyaways and ponytails.
Diane says the Smoothing Brush, item D9014, is made with 100% boar in medium firm bristles on a curved head with a precision tip for edges, and that the handle is solid wood. No size or cushion is given. An Amazon title for a similar Diane brush says "nylon reinforced", which Diane's page does not, so check the listing description against the maker's before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a boar bristle brush and a boar and nylon brush?
A boar bristle brush uses natural bristles only. A boar and nylon brush adds nylon tufts or quills, which Mason Pearson and Kent describe as the part that works through knots, while the bristle spreads natural oils.
Is there a good Mason Pearson alternative?
Kent's PF01 and Denman's D81M both pair nylon with boar or natural bristle, and Kent names a cushion. Their pages do not confirm a rubber cushion or matching build, so treat them as similar in outline, not identical.
Which boar bristle brush suits fine hair?
Mason Pearson lists its pure boar Sensitive brushes for very fine or thinning hair, and Spornette says brushes with only boar hair suit normal to fine hair. Kent lists the pure bristle LC4 for medium to thick hair.
How often should you brush with a boar bristle brush?
The American Academy of Dermatology says hair never needs 100 brush strokes a day and that you should brush and comb only to style. Follow the maker's care sheet and clean the brush when hair and product collect.
Can a boar bristle brush help with thinning hair?
Makers describe gentle brushing and shine, but a brush is a cosmetic tool, not a hair-loss treatment. The American Academy of Dermatology advises seeing a dermatologist if you are concerned about thinning hair or hair loss.
How we chose
This guide is desk research. We read each maker's product page, copied the figures into the table above with the exact phrase stored as evidence, and checked the Amazon listing for each brush. We did not test any brush, so nothing here describes how a brush feels or lasts. Where a maker page is silent, the table says Not listed instead of guessing, and Spornette, Bass and Bestool are not picks because their own pages did not give product details we could read.
At time of writing (November 8, 2026), every Check price on Amazon button goes to a listing that was new and in stock, and three picks open a labeled Amazon search because we could not confirm one exact new listing that matched the maker's product name. Sizes come from the maker pages, which differ in what they report; Mason Pearson uses inches and centimeters and Kent uses millimeters.
