Purple shampoo does not come with one universal waiting time. We checked the current official directions for 30 exact shampoos and found contact times ranging from rinse-through use to five minutes, plus two open-ended instructions that let the reader go longer. Nine of the 30 checked sources did not give an exact number at all.
The practical point is simple: use the direction for the bottle in your hand, not a timing rule copied from another purple shampoo. The table below preserves the wording that matters—whether the clock starts on the first or second lather, whether there is a firm ceiling, and whether the brand adds gloves, a patch test or a follow-up step.
What the 30 directions show
- 9 of 30 gave no exact numeric contact time. Directions such as “rinse,” “a few minutes” and “a little longer” were kept non-numeric.
- 3 of 30 capped the checked route at two minutes or less. L’Oréal Paris EverPure says up to two minutes; John Frieda Violet Crush and UNITE BLONDA each give one minute.
- 12 of 30 sit in the common 1–3 or 3–5 minute bands. That still does not make their formulas interchangeable.
- 6 of 30 use flexible or open-ended directions. These include rinse-through use with an optional five-minute route, a stated minimum with no maximum, or “longer” for more toning.
- 8 of 30 include an extra glove, hand-rinse or patch/allergy-test signal on the checked source. Those precautions are not consistent across the category.

The details most likely to be lost in a generic timing chart
Redken and Matrix time the second lather
Both official pages direct a first lather and rinse, then apply the 3–5 minute contact time to a repeat lather. Turning either direction into “leave the shampoo on for five minutes” removes a meaningful step.
Some sources publish a ceiling; others publish only a starting point
K18 says 1–3 minutes maximum, and UNITE says one minute and “do not exceed.” Kérastase, by contrast, says at least two minutes or longer, while Sun Bum says two to three minutes or longer. Those are materially different instruction shapes even before hair porosity and color are considered.
A missing number is still a useful finding
Nine current sources did not give a measurable minute value. For example, Fanola and milk_shake say “a few minutes,” while Oribe, Not Your Mother’s, Davines and AG Care direct a rinse without a waiting step. We did not borrow numbers from reviews, old packaging or a matching conditioner to make the table look complete.

We selected a predeclared cross-section of current mass, prestige, salon and professional purple/violet/blue toning shampoos. Masks, conditioners, leave-in toners, glosses and oxidative color were excluded. Each row records the exact named product, region of the checked source, application wording, contact-time structure, frequency, glove/hand advice, patch or allergy-test wording, follow-up direction and listing status.
We classified the directions only after collection. “A few minutes” remained non-numeric. “At least two minutes” and “two to three minutes or longer” were treated as open-ended. A rinse-through route with an optional five-minute route was treated as flexible. We did not infer pigment strength, transfer timing between products or treat a manufacturer claim as a HomeWise-tested fact.
Limitations
Brand pages can change, and directions can vary by country, package revision and formula generation. Physical packaging may include warnings that a product page omits. The sample is broad but not every purple shampoo on the market. The percentages describe these 30 checked sources, not every formula sold worldwide.
