40 current acne-wash Drug Facts labels checked

Twenty-three labels give no contact time. The 17 that do range from 20–30 seconds to 1–3 minutes.

Chart showing that 23 of 40 acne wash labels state no contact time, while 12 benzoyl peroxide and 5 salicylic acid labels state a time
Contact-time disclosure across 40 current U.S. DailyMed acne-wash labels.

We audited 40 active U.S. Drug Facts labels for wash-off acne products: 20 with benzoyl peroxide and 20 with salicylic acid. For each label, we recorded the active strength, stated use area, contact-time wording, numeric frequency directions and effective date.

The short answer: there is no single label-based answer to how long acne wash should stay on. Twenty-three of the 40 labels do not state a contact time. Among the 17 that do, the directions range from 20–30 seconds to 1–3 minutes. Benzoyl peroxide labels were more likely to publish a time in this sample—12 of 20, compared with five of 20 salicylic acid labels.

This is a current-label audit, not a clinical comparison or a universal treatment schedule. A missing contact time does not prove that immediate rinsing is optimal, and a longer stated time does not make one wash more effective. Follow the Drug Facts panel on the exact product you own and ask a clinician or pharmacist when the label does not answer a question relevant to your care.

What the 40 labels show

Finding Labels Share of sample
No contact time stated 23 57.5%
Any contact time stated 17 42.5%
Benzoyl peroxide label states a time 12 of 20 60%
Salicylic acid label states a time 5 of 20 25%
Any numeric frequency stated 27 67.5%
Face-only label 31 77.5%

The label dates in the sample run from 23 April 2018 to 31 July 2026. We checked that each selected DailyMed record had at least one active marketing entry as of 20 August 2026; that is a listing-status check, not a claim about retailer stock.

The published contact times span six different buckets

Contact-time wording Labels Share
No contact time stated 23 57.5%
1–2 minutes 7 17.5%
20–30 seconds 5 12.5%
1–3 minutes 2 5%
30–60 seconds 2 5%
90 seconds 1 2.5%

The active ingredient alone does not supply the missing instruction. The six 10% benzoyl peroxide washes cover four patterns: no stated time, 20–30 seconds, 1–2 minutes and 1–3 minutes. The 17 salicylic acid washes at 2% also range from no time to 20–30 seconds, 30–60 seconds and 1–2 minutes.

That is the most useful result of the audit: copying the timing from another bottle is not the same as following the label, even when the active and percentage appear to match.

Acne-wash directions for all 40 products

Each product name links to the exact DailyMed label checked. “No contact time stated” means that the directions did not publish a duration; it is not an independently derived recommendation. Frequency categories preserve the practical meaning of the label wording without treating “daily” and “start daily, then increase” as equivalent.

Frequency directions vary almost as much as contact time

Thirteen labels say to start once daily and increase to two or three times daily if needed. Another 13 give no numeric frequency. Six say daily, three say to start once daily without publishing a higher numeric ceiling, three say twice daily and two say one to two times daily.

Those distinctions matter when a routine already includes a leave-on acid, retinoid or another acne medication. Our related guide to supporting skin during acne treatment focuses on the surrounding cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen steps; it is not a substitute for the active wash label.

Strength does not predict the directions

The benzoyl peroxide sample spans 2.5% to 10%. It includes three labels at 2.5%, one at 2.6%, six at 4%, four at 5% and six at 10%. The salicylic acid sample spans 1% to 2%, with 17 of 20 labels at 2%.

Those ranges sit within the active concentrations in the FDA’s current over-the-counter topical acne monograph: 2.5% to 10% benzoyl peroxide and 0.5% to 2% salicylic acid. The monograph defines permitted active ranges; it does not create one shared contact time for every wash format.

Face and body directions should not be treated as interchangeable

Thirty-one labels are face-only in this audit, seven state face and body use, and two are body-only. Our face-wash guide and body-wash guide answer product-selection questions. This page answers the narrower label question: what timing and frequency information does the Drug Facts panel actually provide?

For routines where irritation is the limiting factor, the barrier-conscious body-acne guide and our drugstore cleanser guide for hormonal breakouts provide context. A leave-on salicylic acid toner or salicylic acid moisturizer is a different format and should not inherit a wash-off label’s contact time.

HomeWise Research methodology

  • Research completed: 20 August 2026
  • Products/data points checked: 40 active U.S. wash-off acne product labels
  • Primary sources consulted: 42 (40 DailyMed labels, the FDA OTC acne monograph and FDA Structured Product Labeling resources)
  • Additional sources: 0 used for factual dataset fields
  • Research type: Claim audit and label-data analysis
  • Hands-on testing performed by HomeWise: No
  • Last verified: 20 August 2026

Selection method: We built a deliberately balanced sample of 20 benzoyl peroxide and 20 salicylic acid wash-off products, covering national brands, retailer labels and direct-to-consumer brands. Products had to provide an identifiable U.S. Drug Facts label in DailyMed, state acne-treatment use or identify an acne cleanser/wash in the structured product record, and have at least one active marketing record on the research date. Leave-on treatments, bars not presented as wash-off acne cleansers, scrubs without an OTC acne active and duplicate package sizes under the same label were excluded.

Collection and calculation: Active strength, directions, effective date, marketing records and product identity were extracted from each current DailyMed Structured Product Label. Contact-time and frequency wording were normalized into the categories shown above. Percentages use 40 as the denominator unless an active-specific denominator is stated.

Limitations: This is a purposive sample, not a census or market-share estimate. DailyMed reproduces submitted Structured Product Labeling; a listing is not FDA approval, and a record can be revised after our check. Retail inventory was not measured. We did not compare clinical outcomes, tolerability, ingredient quality, package size or price. The package in hand remains the final source for the product being used.
