Use citric acid only when your exact machine instructions permit it, at the specified dilution. Otherwise choose the recommended descaler.

Choose a descaling method from your exact coffee maker manual. Vinegar and citric acid are not universal substitutes for the recommended descaler, and the correct dilution, cycle and rinse procedure depend on the model.
Find the model-specific instructions first
Read the model number from the machine label and find its official maintenance instructions. Check the approved descaler, quantity of water, required container, filter removal, button sequence and rinse steps. A method for one brewer is not a safe template for a different boiler or pump system.
Vinegar, citric acid or a branded descaler?
Nespresso’s VertuoLine descaling guide warns that alternatives such as vinegar or store-bought descalers may damage that machine. By contrast, the Breville BDC650 manual gives a vinegar procedure. The difference is why an instruction for all coffee makers would be misleading.
Citric acid’s food-grade designation does not establish compatibility with a machine’s seals, metals or controls. Use a powder only if the model instructions allow it and give a suitable dilution. Do not make a solution stronger because scale looks heavy.
A preparation checklist, not a universal cycle
- Check that descaling is due under the manual’s schedule or alert system.
- Prepare the specified descaler and water quantity, and protect nearby surfaces.
- Remove coffee, pods or water-filter cartridges only as directed.
- Run the exact descaling procedure without inventing a pause, soak or extra brew cycle.
- Complete every prescribed rinse with fresh water and restore components as directed.
Do not put baking soda into the rinse tank to neutralise acid. Use the model’s fresh-water rinse procedure. Do not mix descaler with bleach, other cleaning products or coffee-oil detergent.
If the machine still smells or flows badly
Check that the full rinse cycle completed. Do not repeatedly add acid, open hot components or insert tools into needles or valves without model-specific instructions. Stop and consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance if an error, leak or blockage persists.
Descaling and removing coffee oils are different maintenance jobs. A cleaning tablet, backflush detergent and mineral descaler are not interchangeable. Some machines do not support user backflushing or user descaling of every circuit.
Set the next maintenance reminder
Use the manual’s water-hardness and usage guidance rather than a universal monthly interval. Record the date and product used so you can follow the same approved procedure next time.
